Police on Thursday were still unable to provide clear answers to mysterious hand injuries suffered by two employees at a Malmö postal sorting facility on Wednesday.

Early on Wednesday morning, the two workers reported experiencing sudden pain in their hands. Postnord reported the incident to police, who closed the terminal and brought in both a bomb squad and an expert in chemical and biological weapons. A working theory is that something within a package that passed through the sorting line may have leaked out and caused the workers’ hand pain.

The two employees were taken to hospital and released later in the day.

“Those who were injured are feeling good but they have stayed home today. Their boss picked them up at the hospital yesterday and took them home, where they managed well,” Postnord spokesperson Maria Ibsen said.

Because the terminal was closed on Wednesday, residents in southern Sweden did not receive their mail. Everyone living in postal codes that begin with 20 through 29 are affected, although Ibsen said the impact would be minimal.

“People in those postal codes will receive their mail on Thursday but there will be delays. By Friday we expect to be back in full swing,” she said.

Police are now treating the incident as a workplace accident and have concluded that nothing dangerous is in the sorting facility.
