Mystery surrounds incident at Malmö postal facility

Police were called to the postal sorting facility on Borrgatan early on Wednesday morning but after a number of hours on the scene, there was no explanation for what caused the mysterious injuries. 

 

“We don’t yet know what the cause was, but we have thus far not found anything dangerous,” Ewa-Gun Westford of Sweden’s South Police Region said. 

 

The incident occurred at around 5am on Wednesday and the postal terminal was closed while a bomb squad from the Swedish National Police was brought in to investigate. An expert in chemical and biological weapons was also called in. 

 

Although police were unable to provide clear answers as of Wednesday evening, one theory is that something within a package that passed through the sorting line may have leaked out and caused the workers’ hand pain. 

 

“What we can say is simply that our employees experienced discomfort after coming into contact with something. One can assume that there may have been some sort of leakage from a package and when something like that happens, we contact the police,” Postnord spokesperson Mara Ibsen told broadcaster SVT. 

 

The two employees were taken to hospital early on Wednesday and released later in the day. Their work gloves were also examined by police investigators but as of 7pm there was no indication that any dangerous material had been found. 

 

As a result of the incident, all mail delivery from the Malmö terminal was stopped. Residents of Skåne will thus have to contend with a delay in receiving their mail, Postnord said.
