Parisian film lovers were treated to a movie going experience to remember on Sunday night as the world's "most beautiful avenue" was transformed into a giant open-air cinema for one night only.

It was a night of movie magic in a city well known for its love affair with cinema.

At 8.30 pm on Sunday night, 1,700 people flocked to the Champs-Elysées to see French fantasy comedy Les Visiteurs on a giant screen positioned 100 meters in front of the Arc de Triomphe.

The event was part of an initiative by the Champs-Elysées Committee, which unites 180 of the businesses present on the avenue, as well as partners including the City of Paris and France's National Cinema Center (CNC).

And it was no small feat, requiring a crane to lift the six-ton 180 m2 screen, 30 metres into the air to install it.

The lucky attendees, which had been limited to 1,700 due to security worries, were chosen at random from among those who voted for their film of choice from a total of 16,000 participants.

And unsurprisingly they weren't left disappointed.

"It's amazing to be sitting on the Champs-Élysées to watch a movie," one woman told AFP. "I came with my godchildren of 6 and 9 years old. Everyone is very excited by the experience."
