Fury after court frees ‘new wolf pack’ accused of rape at tourist resort in Gran Canaria

Four men and a 15-year-old boy who dubbed themselves ‘la nueva manada’ – the new wolf pack – have been accused of gang raping a 16-year-old girl during the San Juan beach celebrations on the island of Gran Canaria last weekend.

The four men aged between 19 and 24 years of age were freed on bail on Thursday pending further investigation after making statements to a magistrate.

They are accused of drugging and raping a 16-year-old girl during the beach festivities at Maspalomas, a popular resort in the south of the island, last Saturday.

They reportedly filmed the assault on a mobile phone and called themselves the “new wolf pack” in reference to the high-profile case of the five men convicted of sex abuse of an 18-year-old woman during San Fermin’s running of the bulls in Pamplona in 2018.

Those five men, who gained notoriety for calling themselves La Manada – the wolf pack – in a Whatsapp group where they discussed the attack were acquitted of rape but found guilty of the lower charge of sexual abuse, and were freed by a court last week.

Spanish media was quick to link the two cases and blamed the lenient treatment of the Pamplona perpetrators.

Women’s groups have called for street protests against the decision to allow the suspected men to remain at liberty.

Their bail conditions require them to report to the court every fortnight and they are banned from leaving the island or attempting to contact the alleged victim.

News of the latest attack emerged as the victim of La Manada in Pamplona broke her silence about her ordeal and urged women to report their attackers.

"Do not stay silent, because if you do, you are letting them win," she said.
