Man charged with murder of Australian in Gothenburg
A man has been charged for killing an Australian citizen in a stabbing in Gothenburg last winter.
The Australian was found seriously injured early in the morning five days before Christmas at Odinsplatsen in central Gothenburg. He was taken to the hospital, but later died there from his injuries after being stabbed in the abdomen.
The suspect, a 27-year-old Swedish national who was arrested in January, has now been charged with the Australian's murder.
"Everything suggests a random encounter between the victim and perpetrator," prosecutor Niklas Högdén told the Göteborgs-posten. The victim, identified in Australian media as Kai Foley, had reportedly been on his way home from visiting a friend when he encountered the other man.
The suspect has also been charged with unlawful threat for showing a knife and a gun, or possibly an object that resembled a gun, to another man elsewhere in Gothenburg later on the day of the stabbing.
He denies the charges and says that he doesn't remember the incident.
According to an earlier report in Göteborgs-posten, the suspect was previously known to police in connection with offences including mugging and narcotics.
