While most of the country has been enjoying nice summer weather, southern Germany is dealing with serious storms.

Lightning, hail, and flooded streets - heavy storms have given the emergency services in southern Germany a lot to do. Torrential rain and a drop in temperatures has led to mayhem across the southern states, leaving many homes and streets flooded

In the Upper Palatinate, police have reported fist-sized hailstones raining down across the German-Czech border. Numerous roofs and vehicles were severely damaged as a result.

In Franconia and Hessen, reports of streets and cellars flooding are commonplace - some cellars are currently under around 80 centimetres of water. In Regenburg, a lighting strike set a roof on fire.

Things were especially bad in the region of Baden-Württenburg south of Stuttgart. The main train station in the city of Reutlingen had to close temporarily because of floods. The base of a building crane was washed away, and water damaged a transformer on a building site, causing a power outage.

In Kirchheim unter Teck, a town near Stuttgart, the police had to free an old man from his car, which was filled up with water. A policeman smashed the window, slightly injuring himself. The driver was unhurt.

Meteorologists from the German Weather Services expect isolated storms and heavy rains to hit the south again on Tuesday.
