Police reported that no people were injured in the accident which took place not far from Lake Constance. The driver and four passengers aboard the regional train were unhurt.
According to the police report, a herd of around 450 animals had freed themselves from their enclosure for reasons which were still unclear. They then walked onto the railway track early in the morning on Wednesday.
But the train driver could not brake the locomotive in time; the accident happened at 4:40 am. Afterwards the animals’ shepherd gathered and took care of the remaining sheep.
The train was on its way to Engen from Singen in the deep southwest of the country near the German-Swiss border. It was able to continue on its way to Engen after some time.
The railway line had to remain closed for about an hour and a half and replacement transport services were put in place.
