Heatwave hits Scandinavian last-minute holiday prices as Swedes stay at home

A record-warm May and sunny start to June has hit the holiday industry as Swedes stay at home to enjoy the weather and opt against booking last-minute trips abroad.

As a consequence, prices have dropped and anyone looking further afield in the coming weeks could find they get a better deal than usual.

Many charter travellers will have booked their trips away from Sweden months ago, but among those who leave it to the last minute interest is tepid at the moment.

"Our prices to the Mediterranean have fallen by 25 percent in May compared to last year. There are plenty of last-minute trips at good prices right now, but it can change very quickly because of the weather," Clara Larsson from travel agent Apollo told news wire TT.

Adelina Dankova from fellow agency Tui reported a similar effect:

“Right now prices are affected by the hot weather up to Midsummer. After Midsummer pricing seems to be back to the levels we had last summer.”

A similar effect has occurred in Denmark, where tickets to otherwise popular destinations have been selling at half price. Danes looking for a bargain trip to Scandinavian favourites like Greece, Turkey and Italian have had a slice of luck.

"It's not the best weather for the charter industry. If I said it was I’d be lying," Stig Elling from Bravo Tours told Danish news wire Ritzau.
