The 25-year-old father on Sunday had gone to the lake of Illmensee in Baden-Württemberg on Sunday with his three children between the ages of 1.5 and 5 years old, as well as with an acquaintance, according to police. The group set off onto the lake in a paddle boat, but about 100 metres away from the shore, the man’s three-year-old son fell overboard.

The father jumped into the water to save his child, while people on the shore called for help. A 55-year-old man on the shore also jumped in and swam towards the boy and the boat. The two men were then able to bring the boy back onto the boat.

But then the father went back under water, and the 55-year-old man could no longer find him, police report. About 40 minutes later, rescue divers who had been called in found the father and tried to revive him. But police say he died on the way to the hospital.

The three-year-old son was brought to hospital, but doctors found him to be uninjured.
