Paris allows big dogs to take Metro (as long as they have a ticket)
Paris has relaxed the rules around taking dogs on the Metro meaning big mutts can now ride the city's transport system although they will not be allowed to jump the barriers and travel for free (like many of the locals do).
Until now dog owners were only allowed to travel with the more petite Paris pooches, while big dogs were only allowed on the RER train network.
Big dogs were classed as anything "bigger than a box". (See pics below)
But now RATP, which runs the Paris transport network, has softened its stance towards the bigger variety of mutts and from now on will allow their owners to take them on the Metro.
However they will not allow them to dodge fares. Owners must have a ticket for their dogs, albeit at a reduced tariff if they want to travel.
Other rules the RATP insist on is that the dog must be muzzled and on a lead.
We should not be surprised by the efforts of authorities to accommodate dog owners for as the author of a Paris blog noted: "As anyone who has spent some time in Paris will know, dogs have a special place in Parisian society. Most striking is the way that dogs accompany their owners to places usually exclusively reserved for humans, such as restaurants, shops and public transport."
