Police in Gothenburg made a stinky discovery this week when a suspicious package they were called out to investigate turned out to be fishier than previously thought.

On Monday evening a security guard raised the alarm about a possible bomb after spotting a large taped-up package sitting on a bench at Nils Ericsonsplatsen near Gothenburg's busy Central Station.

When police arrived at the scene they judged that the package could be opened for further inspection, and after cutting through the tape they found not explosives, but 10 kilos of frozen cod inside.

"I don't know who the fish belongs to. I assume that someone has been out fishing and forgotten the parcel there. I don't know what happened with the cod after that," Swedish police west region press spokesperson Peter Adlersson told local newspaper Göteborgs Posten.

With a strategic location on the country's west coast and close proximity to the North Sea, Sweden's second city is famous for its fish and seafood. And when news of the package's contents emerged, Swedes wasted little time in poking fun at the farcical situation.

"This could only happen in Gothenburg," TT news agency reporter Niklas Svahn wrote on Twitter.

"Am I the only one who sees a link to Isis?" joked Adam Norlin Persson.

But perhaps the harshest take came from Glenn Bördig:

"People who believe that eating fish in some way makes you smarter. Have you even met a Gothenburger?"
