Lucerne

The central Swiss city of Lucerne has charm by the bucketload, from the beautiful fountains and wooden bridge in the medieval Old Town to its setting by Lake Lucerne, with Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus a stone’s throw away.

Stoos

Speaking of Lake Lucerne, one of the best viewpoints is from the Fronalpstock above Stoos, which boasts the highest restaurant in the canton of Schwyz. Stay overnight in one of its five rooms and catch the stunning sunset in the morning.

Lavaux

Dating from the 12th century, the terraced vineyards of the Lavaux region on Lake Geneva are simply beautiful. Take a wander through the winding paths from village to village, stopping in caves along the way for a spot of wine tasting. On a sunny day the view over Lake Geneva is wonderful.

Mount Titlis

The ride up to the summit station of Mount Titlis above Engelberg is a must-do in Switzerland. Though you can’t quite view the mountain from the perspective of this drone, the experience of walking across the Titlis Cliff Walk – the highest suspension footbridge in Europe – will come pretty close.

Matterhorn

The Valais village of Zermatt and its famous mountain are stunning at any time of year, but as this footage shows, don’t dismiss it in autumn when the turning leaves create a rich carpet of colour.

Val d’Herens

It’s hardly the most famous place in Switzerland but this area in the canton of Valais is all the better for it. Explore charmingly preserved mountain villages with their old wooden mazots, the mighty Grand Dixence dam and family-friendly ski areas.

Rhine Falls

The largest waterfall in Europe hammers down the river near Schaffhausen in north-eastern Switzerland. Take a boat trip on the river to get up close to the torrent, or stand on viewing platforms that jut out over the river and feel the spray in your face.

Lauterbrunnen

With its sheer cliffs and tumbling waterfalls, it’s easy to see why this truly awesome valley in the Bernese Oberland inspired Tolkein’s Rivendell

Oeschinensee

Hike around this lake above the village of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland for incredible views over the impossibly turquoise water. In winter the lake freezes and it’s possible to skate or walk on the ice.

Glacier 3000

Another mountaintop beauty spot, Glacier 3,000 is located between Gstaad and Les Diablerets in the Vaud Alps. Take the cable car up to the top to ski or hike on the glacier and walk between two mountain peaks on the Peak Walk suspension bridge.
