An entrepreneur is launching a sex shop in one of Norway's most northeasterly Arctic villages, betting on an untapped demand for sex toys, raunchy underwear and porn from its inhabitants and their Russian neighbours.
Bjørn Lund (48) has converted a 50-square-metre hunting and fishing shop in the village of Sandnes, just a few kilometres from the Russian border, and plans to open in March. He said he had become aware of the extent of demand when he ran a convenience shop in the region a decade ago. "When I sold these goods earlier, we had customers from all over the county," he told the Finnmarken newspaper. "But it was a little difficult to sell such items in the same place where people came to buy food. I thought, 'the community is small and there is a lot of talk. It might therefore easier to sell erotic articles in a separate shop'." Lund has signed a franchise agreement with Erotikkland, a sex shop based in Kristiansand, more than 2,000km away in southern Norway. "I've ordered a lot of items. I'll stock up and then see what customers want," he told the newspaper. "The shop signs are on the way." According to Amund Trellevik, the journalist with Finnmarken who first broke the story, Lund plans to advertise in the Russian newspapers in the hope of winning customers from towns across the border.
