Swedish Nordic Noir heroine Lisbeth Salander is returning to Hollywood and this time with an entirely new cast.

The fourth Millennium novel, 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', was released to much hype almost two years ago. Written by Swedish author David Lagercrantz, it was the first book in the series not penned by its late creator Stieg Larsson himself.

Noomi Rapace played main character Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish movie adaptations of the novels and Rooney Mara in the English-language version. And now the search is on to find the next star to step into the shoes of the goth-inspired computer hacker heroine.

Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, said: "In all of contemporary literature, Lisbeth Salander is completely sui generis – probably one of the greatest female literary characters of all time in my view. Modern punk defiance personified, she is unforgettable in every incarnation, truly one of the most compelling characters we've seen in recent years."

Directed by Fede Alvarez, it is the series' first movie to be made directly in English. The first novel, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', was made in Swedish with an English remake.

Uruguayan filmmaker Alvarez, whose previous movies include 'Evil Dead' and 'Don't Breathe', said in a statement he was "hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity".

"Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We've got a great script and now comes the most fun part – finding our Lisbeth," he added.

Production of the new instalment is set to begin in September this year with a release date scheduled for October 5th, 2018. Steven Knight, Jay Basu and Alvarez wrote the screenplay.

The four books of the Millennium series have sold more than 86 million copies since their release. Lagercrantz is writing another two sequels. Find out more about the next one here.
