WATCH: Swedes mark International Women's Day with flash mobs
Flash mobs took place in some of Sweden’s biggest cities on Wednesday as International Women’s Day was marked by mass sing-alongs, including at Stockholm’s Central Station, which was filled by participants.
Just over 1,000 people said they would take part in the rally at Stockholm's main rail hub, and on Wednesday afternoon the entrance hall was turned pink by people wearing knitted "pussyhats".
The hats were created in response to Donald Trump’s 2005 comments about grabbing women "by the pussy" in a tape that was leaked in the build-up to the 2016 US election.
Participants in the Swedish flash mobs sang "I can't keep quiet" by LA singer Milck, which became an anthem when a clip of it being performed by crowds at Washington DC’s Women’s March in January went viral.
In Gothenburg, people braved cold and wet weather to take part in a similar flash mob at the Götaplatsen square, at the end of main drag Avenyn. The event in Sweden’s second city had been organized by local Malin Aghed, who wanted to encourage people to speak up about social issues.
"We're protesting for a society where everyone has a place (...) This is incredible. So many people who want to see a better society," Aghed told TV station SVT at the scene of the Gothenburg flash mob.
