Storm Doris brings harsh winds and snow to Sweden
Southern Sweden was hit by the remnants of Storm Doris over Thursday night, as snow combined with wind to cause tricky conditions for drivers and leave few signs that spring is on its way any time soon.
Between 5 and 10 centimetres of snow was expected to have fallen in the south of the country by Friday morning, thanks to the dying strains of the storm which has made its way west after hitting the UK earlier this week.
"That's what has caused the snowfall over southern Skåne, but it is in a weakened form compared to how it was in the UK before," SMHI meteorologist Mattias Burtu told news agency TT.
"There is a risk of slippery snow on the roads. In the southwestern parts closest to the coast it'll become slippery slush too," he added.
The wind will be at its strongest in the direction of Österlen in the southeast, where speeds up up to 15 metres per second are predicted. A class-one weather warning (the least serious on a scale from one to three) for gales has been issued for the coast around the region.
A number of car accidents occurred caused by the weather in Skåne during Friday morning, including cars sliding and either skidding off roads or into the central reservation railing, but no serious injuries had been reported.
SMHI also has also predicted that there will be snowfall in many parts of Norrbotten and Västerbotten in northern Sweden, but without the wind from the south. The gales and the snow in the south meanwhile are predicted to calm over Friday.
"It'll be a fairly nice day in most parts of the country. In Norrbotten and Västerbotten the snowfall will continue, but otherwise it looks like it’ll be clear and fine," meteorologist Burtu noted.
