Employment increases among Sweden's foreign-born population
The number of foreign-born people employed in Sweden is on the up, leading an overall increase in employment in the country.
National number-crunchers Statistics Sweden have revealed that the number of employed people aged between 15 and 74 in Sweden reached 4,921,000 in the final quarter of 2016 – 74,000 more than in the same quarter the previous year.
A large proportion of that was an increase in foreign-born people working in the country. The number of employed among Sweden's foreign-born population increased by 61,000 in the final quarter of 2016 compared to a year before, hitting a total of 919,000.
That means the employment rate among those not born in Sweden is now 60.8 percent, an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the final quarter of 2015. The employment rate for the Swedish population in general is now 66.9 percent.
There are however still 160,000 people registered as unemployed among the foreign-born in Sweden – 14.9 percent of the total foreign-born population.
Managing the employment gap between those born in Sweden and those born abroad is one of the big challenges facing the Nordic nation as of late.
Last week the OECD's Economic Survey of Sweden 2017 highlighted the work which needs to be done to make sure Sweden's foreign-born residents integrate and avoid unemployment, in particular with regard to foreign-born women.
