Police found no dangerous objects when searching two trains that ground to a halt on Thursday after receiving bomb threats, causing travel chaos for commuters in both Gothenburg and Stockholm.

Traffic in and out of Gothenburg and south of Stockholm was halted for hours as the two trains, at Gothenburg central station and Södertälje Syd, were evacuated and searched by the bomb squad.

Nothing suspicious or dangerous was found on the trains, police said. Traffic was resumed before 6pm, but knock-on delays (ranging from minutes to hours) and cancellations continued into the evening.

In an unrelated incident, a 68-year-old man died after he was hit by a passenger train near Hallsberg, south of Stockholm, when he was trying to take a short cut across the railway tracks to his home.

There were no further delays on Friday morning. Police have launched an investigation into the threats that were made against the two trains.
