Police reported on Sunday that a drunk man wearing a soldier’s uniform with a swastika and carrying a pistol was seen walking through central Nuremberg in the morning, “shocking many witnesses as well as police officers”.

Officers were first alerted to the incident at 7.30am, with witnesses saying that “he appeared to have the [Nazi] mindset”.

A second report to police stated that he had moved to a tavern. But when officers arrived, the man had already gone on his way.

Finally, officers found him outside a club, but at first they could not find a swastika on him. After searching the 27-year-old however, they discovered a patch that seemed to go with the uniform, depicting a swastika under a Nazi eagle.

Police said they believe the man ripped off the patch before officers were able to find him. The Luger pistol - often used by the German armed forces in both the First and Second World Wars - turned out to be an unusable collectors’ item.

The uniform was in fact one used by the East German army during the Cold War, and the man was also wearing high boots.

The 27-year-old is now under arrest for displaying symbols of an unconstitutional organization, as well as for violating weapons laws.
