An explosion at a garbage container in Gothenburg on January 5th is now being investigated as attempted murder, SVT reports.

The incident took place at around 3.30pm last Thursday in the Frölunda area, when a lone man was injured after the bag of rubbish he was throwing into a container exploded.

The man, who works as a cleaner at the refugee centre the container serves, was injured seriously in his legs. Police believe that some kind of explosive charge was inside the bag he was attempting to empty into a container.

Their theory is that the explosive charge was originally inside a dustbin outside the building, and the cleaner inadvertently picked it up in the bag when he was emptying the bins.

The bag exploded near his foot before he could throw it into the container.

Police currently have no suspects for the crime nor are they aware of a possible motive. The case has been handed over to the public prosecutor, and changed from an initial classification of devastation endangering the public to attempted murder.

“It usually falls under that classification when you don’t know the motive or who it is that was the intended victim,” Ben Walli from Gothenburg police told newspaper Göteborgs Posten.
