The transition from 2016 to 2017 included a trip to the hospital for 267 people in Denmark, according to an overview released by Odense University Hospital on Tuesday.

That figure includes both those who were transported to hospital by ambulance and those who brought themselves in. All were for fireworks-related injuries.

Of the 267 people who received hospital treatment, 37 were for serious injuries. Only three of those who were injured seriously were wearing safety glasses, according to the report.

Three-fourths of the New Year’s Eve injuries were men, while a third of all of those who needed treatment were under the age of 15.

Chief physician Jens Lauritsen, who prepared the report, said he was surprised to see that the number of New Year’s Eve injuries has remained at basically the same level for around 20 years.

“One would have thought that this year with all of the focus there was on children’s injuries that there would be more parents who took care of their kids. But that doesn’t seem to be the case,” he told news agency Ritzau.

The vast majority of the injuries were caused by legal fireworks, the report said.
