The fast-food chain explained that it had decided "to turn the situation around and be the ones to make the change"

“In this way, at long last, the name of the brand will be written as it is pronounced.”

“The brand has decided to “castellanize” its name to get closer to the consumers in the Spanish market…From now on Burger will be written with an added ‘u’; Burguer,” the statement send out on Tuesday morning explained.

Of course, the story provoked a furore in Spain, after being picked up by Spanish news agency Europa Press and published across diverse media outlets.

But it turns out the statement was erroneously released a day early and was meant to be a joke for the morning of December 28th, which is El Día de los Inocentes or Spain’s version of April Fools Day.

Evercom, the PR agency representing Burger King admitted it was supposed to be a “bit of a laugh”.
