The man’s body was spotted by a passer-by at about 10pm on Thursday in a garden in Floridsdorf. He was identified by relatives later that night.

On Thursday morning the 39-year-old man killed his wife in an apartment on Vienna’s Mariahilfer Strasse in the 15th district, after she had filed for a divorce. The couple’s 16-year-old son was in the apartment during the brutal attack, and he was the one who called the police.

The woman had already filed a restraining order against him in November and he had been ordered not to approach his wife, after threatening to kill her and physically attacking her.

The woman had been stabbed several times in the chest and heart and died before medics could take her to hospital. Her husband fled the scene before police arrived and a helicopter team searched for him all day, before his body was found later that evening.

The couple reportedly have another son, aged 12, who was already at school and didn’t witness the murder.

A spokeswoman for an agency dealing with domestic violence said that she was shocked by the news. "We took care of this woman and it's awful that her case wasn't taken seriously enough," Rosa Logar said. She added that there were "gaps in the system" and that victims of domestic violence need better protection. "In a case like this it would have been better if the husband had been in prison," she said.
