A five-year-old girl from Innsbruck miraculously survived a ten-metre fall from a roof terrace with no serious injuries - thanks to two quick-thinking pedestrians who saw her hanging from the balcony shortly before she fell, and turned their jackets into an improvised trampoline with which to catch her.

Police said the two men, a 20-year-old Algerian and a 21-year-old Moroccan, were walking past the house where the child lives on Sunday afternoon, when they happened to look up and saw the little girl clinging onto the edge of a balcony.

A fall from such a height would likely cause serious injury, or even death. They quickly took off their jackets and tied them together to form a cloth with which to catch her - and moments later they were able to break her fall.

Police officer Hubert Thonhauser from the Pradl district of Innsbruck said that thanks to the two men the little girl “only had a bite wound on her lip” and that they had saved her from possible death. She was taken to hospital in Innsbruck for a medical examination. Police say they are not sure how she was able to get out onto the terrace, but that she had been left at home alone.
