Arrests over Halloween corpse find in Waldviertel
Police have arrested two suspects they believe are connected to the murder of a man whose mummified body was found in Austria’s Waldviertel on Halloween.
Detectives from Lower Austria arrested a couple at their home in Waidhofen an der Thaya on Wednesday. They believe that the pair shot the victim years ago and then hid his body in the woods.
Forestry workers made a grisly discovery in the woods near Puch on October 31st. They were clearing away a pile of dead wood when they stumbled upon a sleeping bag which contained the body of a partially mummified corpse. The upper part of the body was wrapped in plastic.
A forensic examination concluded that the man had been shot in the chest. A loyalty card for the supermarket chain Penny-Markt was found with the body, and police have identified the man and say he belonged to Vienna’s homeless community.
Detectives were able to establish that he had close contact with a couple who live in the Waldviertel, and they have since been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Susanne Waidecker, spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Krems said that police would not be revealing further details at present, in order not to jeopardise the ongoing investigation.
