The woman, who is originally from Turkey, was entrusted with the gold jewellery given to her son and daughter-in-law as wedding gifts. The couple live in Austria’s western state of Vorarlberg but got married in Turkey.

It’s traditional for guests at Turkish weddings to give the newlyweds gold (usually in the form of coins, bracelets and rings). The couple received gold gifts worth a total of around €20,000, and asked the groom’s mother if she would bring it back to her home in Austria and keep it in a safe until a time when they needed it.

Two years later, the couple decided to get divorced and agreed to split their wedding gold - but when they asked the woman to hand it over she denied that they had ever given it to her.

They took the case to court in Feldkirch, and relatives and friends of both families appeared as witnesses. It became clear that the groom’s mother had embezzled the gold and lied about it.

The judge said that he had never came across a case where so many of the witnesses had lied and there were so many family feuds. He said it was clear that the woman had sold the gold and that the estranged couple would never get it back.
