The alarm was raised at 8.45pm on Monday night after shots were heard in the Seved district in the south of the city. The victim was found outdoors and taken to hospital, but later died of his injuries.

An anonymous witness told newspaper Sydsvenskan that around five shots were heard, and the shooting took place inside an apartment or a stairway inside a block of apartments.

Police did not want to specify whether the shooting occurred at the site where they found the victim. The entirety of Köpmansgatan was cordoned off and examined overnight, and a preliminary murder investigation has now been launched.

The suspected murder would be the eleventh murder in Malmö in 2016, and it is the second murder investigation to be started in the city in a period of two days.

Police said it was too early to comment on whether they may be any connection between Monday’s shooting and other murder investigations underway in the city.

“We are currently compiling information. The investigation will continue over Monday. It is far too early to know if these murders have anything to do with each other,” Malmö police duty officer Magnus Lefèvre told Sydsvenskan.
