The Swedes put some weird things on their sandwiches, but one woman had an unusually nasty surprise when she bit into a bread roll at a school cafeteria and found herself chewing on a dead frog.

The woman, who works for the council in Skövde, said the frog smelled rotten and reported the incident to the environment and health watchdog in Skaraborg, where the bread was made.

“The person who ate the sandwich only discovered the frog when she had it in her mouth, but is sure that the frog had been baked into the bread because there was a hole in the bread where it appeared to have been,” read an inspection report by council officers visiting the factory.

The report stated that it did not think the frog had been added to the bread at the factory, but did not rule out that it could have been an act of sabotage or that it came with the liver pate spread.

“But it's not 100 percent sure. The process [of breadmaking] takes place at a level of around one and a half metres [above floor level] and we don't know how high a frog can jump,” Marlene Anderberg of the environment and health office in Skaraborg told Swedish radio on Monday.

And the head of sales at the factory that produced the bread told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper that the warm and dry environment inside the bakery was not ideal for frogs.

“We were fairly quickly able to say that there was no way the frog came from us. But it was obviously incredibly tragic for the person who ate the sandwich,” he added.
