Winter to arrive in Norway this weekend

Winter will truly hit Norway this weekend, with some areas expected to receive up to 30cm of snow.
“The next few days will be colder in the eastern part of southern Norway. It’s possible that the thermometer will reach just a little above zero in the coastal areas,” Kristen Gislefoss of the Meteorological Institute said.
Meteorologists predict that up to 30 centimetres of snow can fall in the Oslo area this weekend, but Gislefoss emphasized that there is some uncertainty.
“We have no control over the low pressure path. It could be that not one single centimetre will fall in Norway if the low pressure system travels down toward Denmark,” Gislefoss said.
Even with the uncertainty, Norway’s ski enthusiasts have reason to be optimistic.
Bjorli, Geilo and Sjusjøen have already opened slopes on artificial snow, while Kvitfjell and Hafjell aim to start the season on Thursday, November 10th. Norefjell hopes to open on November 12th and may have cross-country trails ready by this weekend. At the Oslo Winter Park at Tryvann, artificial snow cannons were fired up on Thursday.
“We hope to have a good product in ten days but we are not going to act prematurely so early in the season. There should also be some natural snow coming this weekend, which is fun so we are very excited,” the ski resort’s leader Espen Bengtson said.
Norway’s Association for the Promotion of Skiing (Skiforeningen) is also looking forward to the weekend.
“To begin with, we will start packing the trails. We hope to offer good skiing conditions on Saturday and Sunday,” the association’s head of trails, Hege Blichfeldt Sheriff, said.
Western Norway is also expected to get colder temperatures and precipitation on both Friday and Saturday.
“It will be mostly rain on the coast and snow in the mountains. There could also be a bit of precipitation on Sunday, but only a little,” Gislefoss said.
Trøndelag is also expected to receive only small amounts of rain over the weekend.
Northern Norway should get the weekend’s best weather.
“It will be relatively nice for them. There will be a fair amount of sun, while along the coast and in Finnmark, there might be scattered showers,” Gislefoss said.
