An Italian couple, who met while scuba-diving, proved just how deep their love is in an amazing underwater ceremony off the coast of Sardinia.

Luca Pelizzari, who comes from the Veneto region, and Laura Mor from Brescia, swapped the traditional suit and wedding dress for wetsuits on their big day.

The pair said "I do" - or at least made the equivalent hand signals - at a depth of four metres, in front of family, friends and an assortment of marine life.

Their reason for choosing an underwater ceremony was more than just a desire to do something different.

"Love blossomed on the island of Thudufushi, we are both divers and I asked her to marry me during a pit stop on a diving excursion," Pelizzari told The Local.

"The natural conclusion to this proposal, for us, was an underwater marriage - an idea which my diving school had been contemplating for a while and which we were finally able to achieve."

Forty guests attended the ceremony, some experienced divers and some who were less used to the water. The couple wore their wedding clothes - a white dress for Mor and a sequinned waistcoat and hat for Pelizzari - over their wetsuits as they tied the knot.

Instructors from Pelizzari's diving school were on hand to help out in case anyone got into difficulty, but the whole thing went off without a hitch.

"It was a magical event," Pelizzari remembers. "And the celebrations continued the following day with a Catholic ceremony in traditional Italian style.

"The location - the crystal clear sea and the mild climate of Sardinia - made the day unique."
