Sweden is right now experiencing three seasons in one day, with summer, autumn and winter happening simultaneously in different parts of the country, weather forecaster SMHI has said.

This year, an unusually long summer in the Sweden’s southernmost county has continued at least a month after winter was entrenched in places such as Ljusnedal and Lillhärdal in the mountains of northwestern Sweden.
´
"We have had a very long summer in the country. It was only just a few days ago that autumn took a giant leap," Therese Fougman from SMHI told TT newswire.

“Because the country looks like it does and is extremely long, it is in principle always possible that we can have three seasons at the same time, in spring or autumn or both,” she continued.  “It is possible for it to be winter in the mountains and summer in Skåne.”

In meteorological terms, autumn in Sweden is defined as beginning when the average temperature for each 24-hour period remains between 10C and 0C for five days and nights.

If the temperature for each 24-hour period averages over ten degrees for five days and nights, that constitutes summer, even if it might not feel quite chilly.

“With a northeasterly wind and 10-12C, it feels like autumn even if, in meteorological terms, it is still summer,” Fougman said.
