Julie Ann Fiegert, 49, from a town north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, was returning from a “lifelong dream” of walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route from France to Spain when the bus she was travelling on hit a truck.

One passenger died and 20 were seriously injured in the accident on the A-15 motorway outside Soria, northern Spain on Monday afternoon when the Alsa bus ploughed into the back of a truck that was suffering engine problems and travelling at just 18km /h.

Fiegert suffered horrific injuries but was lucky to survive the crash which killed the young woman sitting next to her, a 27 year old from La Rioja and her family are now publicising her plight to raise money for medical expenses.

Michelle Jenner started a GoFundMe page to raise money for medical costs while her mother is being at the hospital in Burgos.

She said her mother had both her legs crushed in the accident as well as suffering “broken arm, broken collarbone, punctured lungs, several broken ribs, torn spleen and pulmonary artery severs”.

She added: “We are thanking God that she is alive, and we want it to stay that way.

Julie Ann does have travel insurance but we don't know how long until this is going to work out.

“She is going to have a very very long stay in this hospital in Madrid and need multiple surgeries as well as therapies, recovery sessions and many costs to keep dad over in Spain by her side the entire time.”

She was said to be heavily sedated but recovering well.

The fund has already raised AUS $8,517 in three days.

“Mum has just finished the holiday of her lifetime walking from France to Spain with her good friends. She has dreamt of doing this her entire life and finally achieved it after setting out over a week ago. She was almost ready to head home this week when tragedy has stopped her in her path.”
