When a sheepdog travelling on a high-speed train in central Germany gave birth to six puppies, its owner left the newborns to die.

According to police in Kassel, a 52-year-old woman was travelling with her sheepdog between Fulda and Göttingen when the pregnant pooch started giving birth to four puppies.

But instead of nurturing the newborns, the dog owner simply tossed them away. Although two were already dead, the other two were alive.

A fellow traveller took one of them, but the woman put the fourth one in the bin at Kassel station and told police, who had been alerted by a train conductor, that it was a stillborn.

But when officers retrieved the tiny whelp from the rubbish container, they found that it was still alive. It was later taken to a vet.

A fifth puppy was born on the platform and the woman assured officers that she would take care of it. But when she boarded her next train to Mühlhausen, she also left it behind.

A sixth puppy was born on the Mühlhausen train.

Police are now investigating a case of animal cruelty and have notified the local animal protection agency about the woman.

“It’s a horrible story,” a police spokesperson said.
