Denmark offers help to earthquake-hit Italy

The Danish government is willing to assist Italy in the rescue and reconstruction process as the country attempts to recover from Wednesday's deadly earthquake.

Italian officials have said that they do not believe the country will need to invoke the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism to call on fellow member states for support and help after more than 240 people died when a powerful earthquake struck the area around Amatrice in central Italy.
But Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that Denmark is ready to pitch in if needed.
“My thoughts go out to the victims, their families and those who are desperately waiting for news about those missing. I feel with all of the Italian people. Denmark is ready to help if the Italians want it in this difficult time,” the PM told news agency Ritzau.
Rasmussen also expressed support for Italy via a rare English-langauge tweet:
Many killed and even more homes razed in #ItalyEarthquake. My thoughts are with those who have lost and the Italian people .

In Italy on Thursday, hundreds of people in the remote area straddling Italian regions Umbria, Marche and Lazio were forced to stay in hastily assembled tents with the risk of aftershocks making it too risky for them to return home.
Scores of buildings were reduced to dusty piles of masonry in communities close to the epicentre of the quake, which had a magnitude of between 6.0 and 6.2.
Although Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into building collapses in the Lazio towns of Accumoli and Amatrice following the earthquake, Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi said it was too early to consider what might have been done to prevent the disaster.
"Today is the time for tears and emotion," he said.
