Parents in Switzerland have remained steadfast in naming their newborns, said the Federal Office of Statistics (BFM) as it published 2015’s most popular baby names.

Mia was the most popular name for baby girls in the country, bumping Emma – 2014’s top choice – into second place. The two names have alternated in the top spot for the past five years.

Noah was once again the boys' name of choice in Switzerland. It has taken the top spot for the past five years except in 2012, when it was surpassed by Luca, which was relegated to third place in 2015.

As ever in this multilingual country, there were different preferences depending on the region.

Mia and Leon were the most popular names in German-speaking cantons, while Emma and Gabriel took the top spots in French-speaking Switzerland, both prime choices for many years.

Sofia and Leonardo were the top names chosen by Swiss-Italian parents, while those in Romansh-speaking areas preferred Alessia and Laurin.
