Five unmissable music events in Sweden this week
It's August, which tends to be the time of year when people are coming back from their holidays and heading into work feeling a little down about the long months ahead.
But that's nothing a little music can’t fix, right? The Local's intern Saina Behnejad looks at a huge week of unmissable music events in Sweden.
1. Malmö Festival: August 12th-19th
With 1.4 million visitors from all around the globe attending Malmö’s festival every year, it’s a must for the avid music lover. Especially since nearly everything is free, with no booking required.
There’s a variety of different activities to participate in including dance, debates and fashion shows. Environmentally conscious? It's also the only festival in Sweden to have won an “A Greener Festival” award.
The headliners this year include Jake Bugg, Melissa Horn, Wolfmother and Danko Jones. With the weather looking a little wet on Friday and Saturday it’s not a bad idea to have an umbrella handy, but the rest of the festival is set for sunny skies. More information available here.

2. The Urban Pioneers: August 11th
Ever heard of the Urban Pioneers? They’re an up-and-coming roots band with a unique so-called ‘hillbilly’ sound.
All three members were previously well-known as outstanding backing musicians, and after eventually decided to make a go of it on their own, they’re now touring the United States and much of Europe.
The Urban Pioneers are one of the fastest rising bands in the roots music scene, a genre that takes influence from several styles, including folk music, roots rock and Americana. Intrigued? The Stockholm concert is on Thursday – today – at 19:00. Tickets can still be bought here.

3. Way Out West: August 11th-13th
Way Out West is to Sweden what Roskilde is to Denmark. A three day festival held in Gothenburg that kicks off today, it hosts a variety of music across the rock, electronic and hiphop genres.
The ever-growing festival has been recognized nationally and internationally with awards, including being named the Most Innovative Festival at the MTV O Music Awards. And with a reputation for being environmentally friendly, it's definitely the right place for those conscious of the planet’s health.
Headliners this year include CHVRCHES, Jamie xx and Thundercat. Hurry though, tickets are selling fast and you don’t want to be left disappointed (they can be bought from the official website here). And a warning: take an umbrella, since the weather forecast suggests rain is likely.

4. Bohuslän Big Band: August 14th
Ever wanted to visit New Orleans but just can’t quite make it right now? Don't worry: Bohuslän Big Band is bringing the jazz vibe to Västra Frölunda near Gothenburg.
They don’t take any shortcuts either, using the full array of big band instruments like saxophones, trombones and tubas. Better still, the show is suitable for all ages, with the audience encouraged to be a part of the show by singing and dancing.
An entertaining and fun event all round that shouldn’t be missed. Doors open at 14:00, and tickets are on sale here.

5. Veronica Maggio: August 13th
A winner of countless awards and boasting multiple hit albums to her name, Veronica Maggio is the reigning queen of Swedish pop, but even she will be breaking new ground this weekend.
Perhaps inspired by friend Håkan Hellström's tradition of performing huge summer gigs at Gothenburg's Ullevi stadium, Maggio's forthcoming performance for around 30,000 people at Stockholm's Stadion will be her biggest ever, and whether you're a fan or just keen to see the best that Swedish pop has to offer then it isn't one to miss.
To make matters more interesting, much-hyped Swedish pop star Maja Francis has just been added as support, while there are even a few rumours that a certain Mr. Hellström himself will turn up for a rendition of he and Maggio's hit duet "Hela Huset" together (and if that hook sounds familiar, it's worth pointing out that Maggio has a writing credit on Avicii's "Hey Brother").
