It remains a mystery how Moon Unit the cat managed to cross the Channel, not to mention what she has been up to for the past eight years.

In the middle of winter eight-and-a-half years ago, Moon Unit wandered off from her home in London.

Her owners eventually accepted that she wasn't coming back.

"We searched and postered and followed so many false sightings, but Moon Unit was gone. We thought she was gone for good. I told myself that she'd found a lovely new family and was living the catty high life," the owners said.

But this summer, the family got an email from the the French animal help group ADAD (Aide et Défense des Animaux en Détresse) to say the cat had been found among strays in the Essonne département to the south of Paris.

Assuming the cat didn't walk, the trip would take at least a day in a car, or half a day by rail (with several changes likely to have been necessary).

The animal group had been able to contact Moon Unit's family thanks to an out-of-date microchip. Pictures of the stray were a perfect match for Moon Unit and the process began to send her back to the UK.

The thrilled owners have started a crowd-funding page to help the group find and re-home more cats like Moon Unit.

Donors have helped raise £1,700 so far.

Exactly how Moon Unit got from London to Paris remains unknown.
