An investigation is underway after a cargo plane overshot the runway at Bergamo airport in the early hours of Friday morning, before crashing through the perimeter fence and sliding onto a road.

Neither of the two crew members aboard the DHL plane from Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport were hurt, and no cars were passing when the incident happened amid heavy rain at around 4am at Orio al Serio airport.

The aircraft, however, was “seriously damaged”, ANSV, the air safety authority, said.

The busy airport was closed for two hours on Friday morning, causing major disruption for passengers. Fifteen Ryanair flights were cancelled while boarding procedures for others lagged. Some flights were diverted to Milan’s Malpensa airport.

Some motorists managed to capture images of the incident.
