The incident dates from 2013 when the Swiss man, who did not have a driving licence, drove at 180km/hr on the A2 motorway between Augst and Sursee in the canton of Lucerne with several police vehicles on his tail, reported news agency ATS.

In speeding away from police he ran over one officer’s foot.

In the ensuring chase, one police car was involved in an accident.

On Wednesday Lucerne’s criminal court convicted the man to two and a half years in prison, of which he must serve one year.

The defendant, from the canton of Zurich, drove himself to the hearing in late July despite still not having a licence.

His car was also found to have stolen licence plates, police said at the time, for which he was rearrested after the hearing.

His car was seized by police.
