A member of France’s elite police unit is in hot water for allegedly racially abusing his colleagues in a drunken rant in Paris. A video of the incident has gone viral.

The officer, a member of the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme (BRB), which deals with armed robberies, allegedly uttered the abusive words “dirty negroes, you blacks and niggers have no place in the police” as other officers tried to calm him down.

As if the alleged racist tirade, reported in Le Parisien, wasn’t bad enough, the police officer was visibly drunk and had been apparently been driving his service car with the flashing light on the dashboard.

The film of the incident began after the officer got into an altercation with a scooter driver and his passenger at Quai Anatole-France in the seventh arrondissement, Le Parisien newspaper reported.

“At the red light, he made a strange backwards reverse manoeuvre,” the driver named Loic told Le Parisien. “I was on the scooter with a friend and he nearly knocked us over. I got down and we began to argue. He pushed me against a fence.”

As the mood became more and more heated. A voice in the video can be heard shouting: “He’s drunk, he’s drunk and he’s a cop as well!”

A passing traffic police unit stop and two officers are seen trying to calm the furious officer, but in vain.

Although it was not captured on the video, Le Parisien reports that it was as the traffic officers were holding him back, he uttered the words: “Dirty negroes, you blacks and niggers have no place in the police”.

“It was crazy,” said Loic. “He insulted them using all the possible names and he still got favourable treatment. They did not handcuff him and he refused to have an alcohol test.”

He also claimed police officers tried to dissuade them from pressing charges.

Le Parisien reported that it took at least 12 officers to eventually calm the situation and persuade the police office to undergo the alcohol test.

In the end he was taken into police custody and will be tried for driving whilst drunk, insulting figures of public authority and violence.

He will also be subject to an internal investigation, but he has not been suspended and the IGPN, the unit that investigates France's police force has not been called in, BFM TV reports.
