A study of what Austrian households like to spend their money on has revealed they splash out more on sex toys than they do on professional development.

The study by research company BRANCHENRADAR also found that Austrians spend nearly double on schnitzel and sausages than they do on apples and carrots.

According to the survey, all together Austrians spend nearly €3 billion on meat products and only €1.7 billion on fruit and vegetables.

When it came to fun in the bedroom, Austria spends annually around €178 million on sex toys. That works out to around €25.4 per person - although it may be the case the high figure is down to just a few big spenders.

It compares to just €19.28 that is spent per person every year on professional development. Researchers admit, however, this may be due to government support for in-work training.

In total, the average Austrian household outgoings add up to €49.900 a year. Like in most European countries, the biggest expenditure was rent, which accounted for around 27.4% of household income.

Leisure costs followed in second place, with Austrians - typically very protective of their leisure time - spending around 15.9% of their cash on their free time activities.

The results were also predictable when it came to shopping, which the average women spending €1,414 on clothes every year compared to men who spent just €628.
