Bribery is present in the Swedish construction industry, according to a survey of managers in the field.

More than half of the managers and supervisors who participated in the Construction Manager Barometer 2016 (Byggschefsbarometern 2016) responded that they believe there is bribery in the trade.

The survey also suggests that suppliers and contractors in the country provide goods and services in order to win contracts, Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports.

Around six in ten of respondents said they had met someone in their industry who had worked on a cash-in-hand basis on the side. Only one in ten believe that is commonplace, however.

"We are actively working on these issues with our member companies and pushing for legislation to eliminate undeclared work and unfair competition," Håkan Lind, communications head at the Swedish Construction Federation told Svenska Dagbladet.

The Construction Manager Barometer  took in answers from 1000 members of trade organization Byggcheferna.
