The car was almost completely demolished after it was hit by a train in Ödsmål near Stenungsund in at around 6am.

And though the driver's side suffered less damage and the male driver was speaking when helped out of the car by emergency services, the local police announced just after 10am on Thursday morning that the man had died.

"The man was conscious and spoke immediately after the accident, but died later at the hospital," police officer Thomas Fuxborg from Swedish police's Western region told news agency TT.

It is still unclear how the car ended up on the railway track.

Around 15 passengers were on the train at the time. No one on board was injured.

All rail traffic ground to a halt between Stenungssund and Svenshögen as a result of the incident, which was expected to affect trains on the busy Gothenburg-Uddevalla line until Thursday afternoon. Replacement buses have been called in.
