Catholic Swedish doctor 'tried to convert patients'
A Swedish doctor has been accused of denying one of his patients antibiotics when he refused to join the Catholic Church.
According to a report by public broadcaster SVT, the man was forced to leave his job as a locum doctor at a practice run by the local authority in southern Sweden, Region Skåne.
Bosses at the GP surgery reported him after it emerged he had filled his room with religious symbols, music stands and hymn books.
He was also accused of having tried to talk his patients into joining the Catholic Church – denying one antibiotics when they refused.
Another patient claimed they had been prescribed turmeric and vitamins to cure their inflamed sweat glands, which only improved after antibiotics were later prescribed.
In the report cited by SVT, the head of the GP surgery wrote that the man had shown no inclination of changing his behaviour. Instead it had escalated, with the doctor referring to “spiritual experiences”.
However, after leaving the position he was offered work at privately-owned health care company Capio. Its head doctor Stefan Bremberg told SVT on Thursday that they had not been aware about the allegations against the man, but would now launch an inquiry.
