Snow returned to Switzerland on Thursday, just days after a heatwave took temperatures over 30 degrees.

Snow fell as low as 1,600m in some parts of the country, with the village of St Moritz in the canton of Graubünden seeing snow at village level.

According to 20 Minuten several mountain passes – usually open at this time of year – were blocked by snow, including the Furka Pass and the Nufenenpass.

MeteoNews forecast temperatures as low as zero on the Gotthard Pass and only 8 to 17 degrees in cities across the country.

Only in Locarno, the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino – the sole sunny place in the country on Thursday – was a more typical summer temperature forecast, of 26 degrees.

Luckily the current conditions are not set to last, with more summery weather returning on the weekend.
