Sartorial slip-up leads police to pipe bomb
Police stopped a man because he was wearing a FCK CPS shirt, only to discover he had been making a pipe bomb.
A 27-year-old man from Dortmund was walking through Cologne’s Old Market with three companions at night when a police patrol noticed that he was wearing a “FCK CPS” (Fuck Cops) T-shirt, according to a police report.
The man appeared nervous when he saw the police patrol and officers decided to search him. Upon examining his backpack, they discovered a plastic bag with an explosive device and a small amount of synthetic party drugs.
Police then decided to search the man’s apartment and found evidence that he had been building a pipe bomb. Further inspection of the bomb found that it was functional and an explosion could have caused “substantial danger for people in the immediate surroundings”.

The 27-year-old had previously been suspected by police to have been involved in politically motivated violence in 2011.
“The case makes clear what the presence of police can reveal with a little intervention and consistent procedures,” police wrote in the report.
The man was arrested after police searched his home and was placed in pre-trial detention, local newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported on Sunday.
