A man has been caught driving with a life size doll in his passenger seat in a lane especially for cars carrying more than one person.

Traffic police noticed the car at around 8am on Thursday and at first assumed that the person in the passenger seat was a little girl. They found it strange, however, that she was dressed in winter clothes in the middle of summer.

Upon closer inspection police realized that the little girl was in fact a life size plastic doll, the Guardia Civil said in a statement released on Tuesday.

The elaborate deception included dressing the doll in clothes, a cap, sunglasses and even putting headphones in its “ears”.

The man was driving on the A-6 road towards Madrid in the BUS-VAO lane, which is specifically for the use of “high occupancy vehicles” – cars carrying more than one person.

The BUS-VAO lane, one of the first of its kind in Europe, has been open on the motorways around Madrid for 10 years.

“The system has the dual purpose of influencing the improvement of public transport buses and promoting the practice of car sharing, otherwise known as “carpooling”,” says the description on the Spanish Highway Association’s website.

The unauthorized use of the lane can face fines of up to €200.
