World Refugee Day: Searching for safety in Europe - in pictures
These stunning photos, shown in Stockholm on World Refugee Day, depict refugees' journeys across Europe. Serbian photographer Marko Risović says the project was "his duty".
"I felt like it was my duty to document the refugee crisis," says photographer Marko Risović, who took the following photos in 2015 between March and December. "I tried to be as honest as possible - I believe the refugee crisis needs to be communicated in a decent way. "
Risović has one message to refugees: "I really respect what you did and the effort you took to get to your destinations. From the very bottom of my heart I wish that you find your dreams in your new home countries."
Some of the refugees were stuck between the Serbian and Croatian border crossing. They spent the nights sleeping on open ground, using the orthodox cemetery which is located here as a shelter.
Families with children were stuck at the border between Greece and Macedonia for days, exposed to extreme weather conditions and without any basic supplies, due to the decision of Macedonian authorities to temporarily close the border.
Chaos erupted at the border between Macedonia and Greece when police tried to organize women and children among refugees to cross to Macedonia after a few days of waiting in a no man's land. Young refugees started pushing through and many women and children were injured.
Early in the morning, this family lit a fire, trying to warm themselves up after a freezing night spent in the open air.

Marko Risović showed his photographs as part of a UNHCR event to mark World Refugee Day on June 20th. They will remain on display at Galleri Kontrast in Stockholm until June 23rd.
