Thanks to the arrival of an African anticyclone meteorologists are dubbing 'Scipione', much of Italy is in for baking summer weather, Ilmeteo.it reported.

Scipione's arrival on Tuesday afternoon will bring an area of high pressure over the country, which will cause hot and stuffy weather for the next few days.

On Wednesday, temperatures of 30C are expected in many Italian cities including Florence and Rome.

Temperatures will continue to rise across much of the centre-north on Thursday, with highs of 34C predicted for the northeastern City of Bolzano.

But Thursday and Friday will see storms hit southwestern parts of the country with Sicily, Calabria, Campania and Basilicata all affected.

The hot sunny weather is expected to continue over the weekend, with temperatures of 30C predicted for cities across the centre-south.

Mountainous areas of northern Italy, however, can expect their weekend to be punctuated by violent summer storms.
