England fans attacked in Lyon ahead of Euro 2016 match

Another day, another outbreak of hooliganism at Euro 2016.

The latest act of violence saw around 30 men wearing black T-shirts launch an attack on England fans who were drinking in a pub in the central city of Lyon.

The hooligans, who have not been identified, are believed to be local ultras who follow Lyon.

As well as all wearing black T-shirts they had red crosses on their arms, and threw tables, chairs and bottles at England fans as they drank in a pub in the centre of the city.

Many of those who had been drinking then swarm out of the pub and chase their attackers away, as punches were thrown.

There were no reports of serious injuries.

The incident is believed to have been an isolated one and many in the city did not witness it.

"I enjoyed a bottle of wine and a steak meal in the old town in Lyon, mixed with Albanians and wathced the French match with other nationalities and did not see one bit of aggro," one England fan in Lyon told The Local.

England fans had been gathering in the city on the eve of their team’s match against Slovakia in nearby St Etienne.

While a minority of England fans have been involved in trouble in Marseille and Lille, it has become clear that fans of other teams as well as local hooligan groups have been targeting them in unprovoked attacks, notably Russian ultras in Marseille.

Euro 2016 has proved to be an opportunity for local hooligan groups of which France has several, with incidents of violence involving French hooligans in Marseille, Nice, Paris and Lyon.

While  there was trouble in Lyon, over in St Etienne, there was a party atmosphere as bars blasted out English music into the streets.
